Caring For Your Sports Bra

Just like your sports bra takes care of you, you can return the favour and take care of it too!  Taking the time to care for your sports bras will help extend their life. Hence keeping you and your bras in top condition.

However it is important to remember that wearing a worn out sports bra can lead to breast pain and ligament damage.  To help you stay comfortable and supported while you exercise. It is recommended you replace your sports bra every 6-8 months depending on use.

Washing your Sports Bra

If you sweat a lot during your workout it is advisable to take off your bra as soon as possible and give it a quick rinse to remove some of the sweat and bacteria that can cause the fibres to break down.

It’s ideal to wash your bra every time you wear it, but this varies on how intense your workout was. When you are ready to wash your sports bra, ideally hand wash it in cool water with a mild detergent.  Washing in hot water can damage fabrics affecting the integrity of your bra. Avoid using fabric softeners because these can actually coat the fabric of the bra, keeping them from wicking away sweat as you work out.

A great option is to take your sports bra in the shower with you after your workout.  This will help wash away sweat and body oil, plus save you time.  Frequent rinsing will help cut back on the frequency you need to hand wash your bra.

Some non wired bras can be machine wased, ensure the clips are fastened and use a garment bag to prevent damage.  Wash on a cool cycle selecting the most delicate washing cycle and do not add any fabric softener.

Never bleach your sports bra.  Always check the care label for specific washing advice.

Drying your Sports Bra

The best option is to dry your sports bra flat in the shade.  A good option is on a towel.   If you do opt to line dry it’s better to hang from the centre of a cupped sports bra, or by the base of a crop top style, rather than the straps.  This prevents the straps getting stretched out by the wet sports bra pulling downwards.  Avoid pegs as they can damage delicate fabrics. Avoid drying in full sunlight as this can cause fading and the breaking down of fibres.

If you have washed your bra in the shower, hang it over the shower rod or tap from the centre of the bra cups and leave to dry.

Do not tumble dry as the elasticity and fibres will deteriorate with heat altering the integrity of your bra. Shrinking of the fabrics can also occur which can cause your sports bras to become misshapen, not to mention alter the fit and comfort of the bra.

Never iron or dry clean your sports bra.
