How to Scoop and Position Breast Tissue for the Perfect Bra Fit

Have you ever put on a bra that felt too small, uncomfortable or unsupportive, only to adjust it a few minutes later and suddenly find it fits much better?

The difference may simply be how you put it on.

One of the most important techniques used by professional bra fitters is called the Scoop and Swoop. It only takes a few seconds, but it can completely change how your bra fits and feels.

Many women unknowingly leave breast tissue sitting underneath the underwire or around the sides of the bra instead of fully inside the cups. This can make a perfectly sized bra appear too small, create uncomfortable digging, or leave you feeling unsupported.

Learning how to correctly position your breast tissue helps your bra do the job it was designed to do.

This guide explains why the Scoop and Swoop method matters, how to do it correctly and what it can reveal about the fit of your bra.

If you haven’t checked your size recently, start with our Determine Your Bra Size guide before following these steps.

What Is the Scoop and Swoop Method?

The Scoop and Swoop is a simple bra-fitting technique that gently moves all of your breast tissue into the bra cups.

Breast tissue naturally extends beyond the front of your chest. It often reaches towards your underarms and slightly underneath your breasts.

If this tissue isn’t positioned correctly, your bra can’t support you properly.

By scooping all of the breast tissue into the cups, you allow the bra to:

  • Support your breasts correctly.

  • Sit in the proper position.

  • Create a more natural shape.

  • Improve comfort.

  • Give a more accurate indication of whether the bra fits.

Professional bra fitters perform this technique during every fitting because it’s one of the quickest ways to improve bra fit.

Why Is It Important?

Many bra fit problems aren’t caused by the wrong bra.

They’re caused by the bra being worn incorrectly.

When breast tissue isn’t fully inside the cups, you may notice:

  • Breast tissue spilling over the cups.

  • Gaps in unexpected places.

  • Underwires sitting on breast tissue.

  • Straps digging into your shoulders.

  • A lack of support.

  • An uneven shape.

After correctly positioning your breast tissue, many of these problems disappear. If they don’t, it’s a good sign that your bra size or style may need adjusting.

How to Scoop and Position Breast Tissue

Follow these simple steps every time you put on a bra.

Step 1: Fasten Your Bra Correctly

Fasten your bra on the loosest hooks if it’s new. The band should sit level around your body.

If you’re unsure about the correct method, visit How to Put On a Bra Correctly.

Step 2: Lean Forward Slightly

Leaning forward allows your breasts to fall naturally into the cups.

This makes it much easier to position all of your breast tissue.

Step 3: Reach Inside One Cup

Using the opposite hand, reach inside one cup.

Place your hand gently around the outside of your breast near your underarm.

Step 4: Scoop Your Breast Tissue

Using a gentle sweeping motion, scoop all of the breast tissue from:

  • Your side.

  • Under your arm.

  • Beneath the breast.

Guide it forward into the bra cup.

Avoid pulling roughly. A gentle movement is all that’s needed.

Step 5: Lift and Position the Breast

Once you’ve scooped the tissue forward, lift it slightly so it sits naturally inside the cup.

The underwire, if present, should now sit behind your breast tissue rather than on it.

Step 6: Repeat on the Other Side

Repeat exactly the same process for the second breast.

Most women find one side needs slightly more adjustment than the other because it’s normal for breasts to differ slightly in size.

Step 7: Adjust the Straps

Now adjust your shoulder straps.

The straps should feel supportive without digging into your shoulders.

Remember, the band—not the straps—provides most of the support.

Step 8: Check Your Fit

Finally, complete our Six-Point Bra Fit Check.

Check:

  • The band.

  • The cups.

  • The centre front.

  • The underwires.

  • The straps.

  • Overall comfort and movement.

This confirms whether your bra is fitting as it should.

What Changes After the Scoop and Swoop?

Many women are surprised by how different their bra feels after correctly positioning their breast tissue.

You may notice:

Better Support

Your breasts sit fully inside the cups, allowing the bra to support them properly.

A Smoother Shape

Correct positioning creates a more balanced silhouette beneath clothing.

More Comfortable Underwires

If you wear an underwired bra, the wires should now sit behind your breast tissue rather than pressing on it.

More Accurate Cup Fit

Sometimes you’ll discover your cups are actually too small because your breast tissue is now sitting where it belongs.

This is valuable information because it helps you choose the correct size.

Common Mistakes

Even experienced bra wearers sometimes skip important steps.

Only Lifting from the Front

Breast tissue extends towards the underarm.

Always scoop from the side as well as underneath.

Tightening the Straps Instead

Over-tightened straps won’t improve cup fit.

Most support comes from the band.

Forgetting to Check the Fit

After completing the Scoop and Swoop, always perform the Six-Point Bra Fit Check.

Assuming Your Bra Is Too Small

After positioning your breast tissue correctly, your bra may feel different.

If overflow appears, it often means the cups are genuinely too small—not that the Scoop and Swoop caused a problem.

Does the Scoop and Swoop Work for Every Bra?

Yes.

The technique is beneficial for almost every bra style.

Including:

  • Everyday bras.

  • Underwired bras.

  • Wirefree bras.

  • T-shirt bras.

  • Full Cup bras.

  • Sports bras.

  • Maternity bras.

  • Nursing bras.

  • Strapless bras.

Regardless of the style, positioning all of your breast tissue correctly helps the bra perform as intended.

What If My Bra Still Doesn’t Fit?

If your bra still feels uncomfortable after performing the Scoop and Swoop, it may indicate another fitting issue.

For example:

  • Cups too small.

  • Band too loose.

  • Underwires too narrow.

  • Bra style not suited to your breast shape.

  • Straps incorrectly adjusted.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I Scoop and Swoop every time I put on a bra?

Yes. It only takes a few seconds and helps ensure your bra fits as intended every time you wear it.

Can the Scoop and Swoop change my bra size?

Not directly, but it can reveal that your current bra size isn’t the best fit. Many women discover they need a larger cup or a different bra style after positioning all of their breast tissue correctly.

Does it work for sports bras?

Yes. It’s just as important when putting on a sports bra because proper positioning improves comfort, support and stability during exercise.

Why does my bra suddenly feel tighter?

After the Scoop and Swoop, more breast tissue is sitting inside the cups where it belongs. If the cups now feel tight or you’re spilling over the top, it’s often a sign that the cup size is too small rather than a problem with the technique.
