The Six-Point Bra Fit Check

Buying the right bra starts with choosing the right size. Finding the right fit is what makes the real difference.

You might wear the correct size on paper but still find your bra uncomfortable. The cups may gape, the band may ride up, or the straps might constantly slip from your shoulders. In many cases, the problem isn’t your size. It’s how the bra fits your unique body shape.

That’s why we recommend checking every new bra using our Six-Point Bra Fit Check.

It only takes a few minutes and can save you from wearing an uncomfortable bra all day. Better still, it helps you understand why a bra works—or doesn’t.

If you haven’t measured yourself recently, start with our Determine Your Bra Size guide before completing this fit check. Once you’ve checked all six points, you’ll have a much better idea whether your bra truly fits.

1. Check the Band

The band is the foundation of every bra.

In fact, around 80% of your bra’s support comes from the band, not the straps. If the band doesn’t fit correctly, the rest of the bra will struggle to do its job.

A well-fitting band should sit straight and level around your body. It should feel firm and supportive without making it difficult to breathe.

A new bra should usually fit comfortably on the loosest hook. As the elastic naturally stretches over time, you’ll be able to move to the tighter hooks and maintain the same level of support.

A correctly fitting band should:

  • Sit level from front to back.
  • Stay in place when you raise your arms.
  • Feel snug without restricting breathing.
  • Stay comfortably against your body.
  • Feel secure throughout the day.

Signs the band is too loose

  • It rides up between your shoulder blades.
  • You can pull it a long way from your back.
  • Your breasts feel unsupported.
  • The straps do all the work.
  • The bra shifts when you move.

Signs the band is too tight

  • It feels painfully restrictive.
  • It leaves deep, painful marks.
  • Breathing feels uncomfortable.
  • The sides roll or dig excessively.
  • You can’t comfortably wear it for more than a short time.

Remember, cups that are too small can also make a band feel tighter than it really is. Before sizing up the band, always check the cup fit as well.

If you’re unsure whether the band is the problem, our Bra Fit Troubleshooter can help identify the most likely cause.

2. Check the Cups

The cups should completely contain your breast tissue while creating a smooth, natural shape.

After putting your bra on, gently lean forward and scoop all of your breast tissue into each cup. This simple step often changes the way a bra fits.

Once everything is positioned correctly, the cups should sit smoothly against your breasts.

A correctly fitting cup should

  • Fully contain all breast tissue.
  • Sit smoothly without wrinkles.
  • Avoid cutting into the top or sides.
  • Create a natural shape.
  • Stay in place throughout the day.

Signs the cups are too small

  • Breast tissue spills over the top.
  • Breast tissue escapes near the underarm.
  • The centre front doesn’t sit flat.
  • The underwires rest on breast tissue.
  • The bra feels tight despite the correct band.

Signs the cups are too large

  • Wrinkles appear in the cups.
  • The top of the cup gaps away from the breast.
  • The cups collapse or lose shape.
  • The bra shifts while moving.
  • The neckline doesn’t sit flat.

Sometimes cup problems aren’t caused by size at all.

Different bras are designed for different breast shapes. If one style gaps while another fits beautifully in exactly the same size, your breast shape may simply suit one design better than another.

Our Breast Shape Guide explains how projection, fullness and breast roots affect cup fit.

3. Check the Centre Front

The centre front, often called the gore, is the small panel that joins the two cups together.

On most underwired bras, this section should sit comfortably against your chest.

When it sits correctly, the cups and underwires are usually positioned where they should be.

A correctly fitting centre front should:

  • Sit comfortably against your chest.
  • Feel secure without digging.
  • Stay flat throughout the day.
  • Help separate the breasts naturally.

Signs there may be a problem

  • The centre front lifts away from your body.
  • It rocks backwards and forwards.
  • It digs painfully into your sternum.
  • The breasts push the centre away from your chest.

If the centre front doesn’t sit flat, it doesn’t automatically mean the bra is the wrong size.

Possible causes include:

  • Cups that are too small.
  • Cups that are too shallow.
  • A bra that doesn’t suit your breast shape.
  • Very close-set breasts.
  • A centre panel that is too high.

Some plunge bras and many wirefree bras are designed differently, so the centre front may not sit exactly the same way.

If this area feels uncomfortable, our Bra Styles Explained section can help you compare different bra constructions.

4. Check the Underwires

If you’re wearing an underwired bra, the underwires should completely surround your breast tissue.

They should sit around the breast, not on it.

Think of the underwire as outlining the natural base of your breast.

A correctly fitting underwire should:

  • Follow the natural breast root.
  • Sit comfortably beneath the breast.
  • Finish just behind the breast tissue.
  • Stay in position during movement.
  • Feel supportive without poking.

Signs the underwire isn’t fitting correctly

  • It sits on breast tissue.
  • It digs into your underarm.
  • It pokes your sternum.
  • It slides down your ribcage.
  • It feels much too wide or narrow.

If the underwire continually moves, the issue may be:

  • Cup depth.
  • Cup size.
  • Band size.
  • Breast shape compatibility.
  • A worn-out bra.

Many women assume underwires are uncomfortable.

In reality, a correctly fitted underwire should be barely noticeable during everyday wear.

If you prefer not to wear underwires, our Underwired vs Wirefree Bra Guide explains the differences and helps you choose the right style.

5. Check the Straps

Bra straps should provide stability, not support the full weight of your breasts.

Many women tighten their straps to compensate for a loose band. Unfortunately, this usually creates shoulder discomfort without improving support.

Correctly adjusted straps should:

  • Sit comfortably on your shoulders.
  • Stay in place all day.
  • Feel secure without digging.
  • Allow natural movement.
  • Work together with the band.

Signs the straps are too loose

  • They continually fall off your shoulders.
  • The cups lose support.
  • The bra shifts while moving.

Signs the straps are too tight

  • They dig painfully into your shoulders.
  • They leave deep marks.
  • They pull the back of the bra upwards.
  • They create unnecessary shoulder pressure.

Remember that many people naturally have one shoulder slightly higher than the other.

It’s perfectly normal to adjust each strap differently.

If your straps constantly fall down, it may indicate that the band is too loose or the bra style isn’t ideal for your shoulder shape.

6. Check Movement and Comfort

A bra might feel perfect while you’re standing still. Real life is rarely that simple.

Before deciding a bra fits, move around naturally. Raise your arms. Twist from side to side. Sit down. Reach overhead. Bend forward. Walk around the room.

If it’s a sports bra, add a few gentle star jumps or jog on the spot.

A well-fitting bra should:

  • Stay comfortably in place.
  • Keep your breasts contained.
  • Allow comfortable breathing.
  • Feel secure during movement.
  • Avoid rubbing or chafing.
  • Give consistent support throughout your daily activities.

Ask yourself one simple question:

If I had to wear this bra all day, would I forget I was wearing it?

If the answer is yes, you’ve probably found an excellent fit.

If not, don’t worry.

A small size adjustment or a different bra style is often all that’s needed.

Our Bra Fit Troubleshooter can help identify exactly what’s happening, while our Bra Sister Size Chart explains how a small size change may improve comfort without dramatically changing cup volume.

When Everything Comes Together

A well-fitting bra shouldn’t just look good in the mirror. It should feel comfortable from morning until night.

By checking the band, cups, centre front, underwires, straps and overall comfort, you’ll quickly learn how to recognise a bra that truly works for your body.

Remember that bra fitting isn’t about finding one “perfect” size.

Different brands, fabrics and styles fit differently. Your breast shape, body shape and personal comfort preferences all play a role.

If you’re still having trouble after completing the Six-Point Bra Fit Check, don’t guess.
