Berlei Fit Guide: Bra Sizing, Fit and Size Advice
Finding your bra size gives you an important starting point when shopping for a new bra.
However, the size printed on the label does not tell the whole story.
Different bra styles use different fabrics, cup shapes, bands and support systems. Even two bras from the same brand can feel different in exactly the same size.
Berlei is a familiar Australian lingerie brand with a broad range of everyday and sports bras. Its collection includes contour bras, spacer bras, seamless styles, full-coverage bras and high-support sports bras.
Understanding Berlei bra sizing can make choosing between these styles much easier.
This Berlei Fit Guide explains how Berlei bands and cups should fit, Australian sizing and sister sizing. We will also look at breast shape, sports bra fit and differences between popular Berlei styles.
We will also compare Berlei sizing with Triumph and popular UK fuller-bust brands.
Importantly, there is no single rule saying every Berlei bra runs small, large or perfectly true to size.
Your breast shape and the individual bra’s construction matter too.
If you are unsure of your current size, start with our Determine Your Size guide. Then use this page to understand how that starting size may work across the Berlei range.
How Do Berlei Bras Fit?
Berlei offers many different types of bras.
This means the fitting experience can vary significantly between styles.
A soft everyday bra will not necessarily feel like a structured contour bra.
A high-support sports bra should feel more secure than many everyday bras.
A spacer cup also behaves differently from a traditional moulded cup.
For this reason, your normal Berlei size should be treated as your starting point rather than a guarantee.
Begin with your correctly fitted Australian size.
Then assess the individual bra.
Our Six-Point Bra Fit Check can help you check the band, cups, centre front, underwires, straps and overall comfort.
Are Berlei Bras True to Size?
Many women can begin with their usual Australian bra size when choosing Berlei.
However, describing the entire brand as “true to size” is too simplistic.
Different Berlei Styles Can Feel Different
Fit can vary because of:
band firmness
fabric stretch
cup depth
cup height
moulding
padding
wire shape
coverage
support level
A firm sports bra may feel tighter than an everyday bra even when both are the correct size.
Likewise, a moulded contour cup may not adapt to your breast shape as easily as a softer cup.
Start With Your Usual Correctly Fitted Size
If you already know your Australian bra size, use it as your starting point.
Then assess the actual fit.
If something feels wrong, identify the problem before changing size.
The band may need adjusting.
The cups may be too small or large.
Alternatively, the bra’s shape may simply not suit your breasts.
Understanding Berlei Band Fit
Your underband provides the foundation of your bra.
It should provide secure support around your torso without becoming painfully tight.
What Should a Berlei Band Feel Like?
A correctly fitted band should:
feel firm and secure
sit level around your torso
remain stable when you move
avoid riding upwards
allow comfortable breathing
support without excessive strap tension
If your bra has adjustable hooks, a new bra should generally fit securely on the loosest setting.
This gives you tighter settings to use as the elastic gradually relaxes.
What If Your Berlei Band Feels Too Tight?
Do not immediately move to a larger band.
Check the cups first.
Cups that are too small can make the entire bra feel tighter.
Breast tissue pushes against the cups and creates additional tension around your torso.
Try fastening the bra backwards with the cups hanging down.
If the band feels more comfortable, investigate the cup size before changing the band.
What If Your Berlei Band Rides Up?
A band that rides upwards may be too loose.
This can reduce support and place extra pressure on your shoulders.
Visit our Band Problems guide if your band regularly moves or feels unstable.
Understanding Berlei Cup Fit
Your breasts should sit comfortably inside the cups.
The exact appearance depends on whether you are wearing a contour, spacer, seamless or sports bra.
However, the basic fitting principles remain similar.
Signs Your Berlei Cups Fit Well
Look for:
Signs Your Cups May Be Too Small
Possible signs include:
spilling over the neckline
bulging around the sides
tissue escaping underneath
wires sitting on breast tissue
the centre front being pushed away
excessive pressure through the cups
Try a larger cup if these problems appear.
Signs Your Cups May Be Too Large
Look for:
However, empty space can also indicate a shape mismatch.
Our Cup Problems guide can help you work out whether size or shape is causing the issue.
Breast Shape and Berlei Fit
Bra size tells you about body measurement and cup volume.
It does not completely describe breast shape.
Two women can wear exactly the same size while needing very different bra styles.
Your breasts may be:
fuller on top
fuller underneath
shallow
projected
close set
wide set
soft
firm
These characteristics can affect how a Berlei bra fits.
Breast Projection
Projected breasts extend further forward from the chest.
They usually need enough depth within the cup.
If a moulded cup is too shallow, breast tissue may push against it rather than settling comfortably inside.
Someone with shallower breasts may experience the opposite problem.
Visit our Breast Projection guide to learn more.
Breast Fullness
Where you carry breast tissue can affect the neckline.
Fuller-on-top breasts may experience cutting along some cup edges.
Fuller-on-bottom breasts may leave space in certain upper cup shapes.
Our Breast Fullness guide explains these differences.
Breast Spacing
The space between your breasts can affect the centre front of an underwired bra.
Close-set breasts may prefer a different centre construction from wider-set breasts.
Explore Breast Spacing and our complete Breast Shape Hub for more help understanding your individual shape.
Understanding Berlei Australian Bra Sizing
Berlei uses Australian bra sizing.
This makes choosing a starting size relatively straightforward if you already wear Australian brands.
Australian band sizes commonly use numbers such as:
8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20 and beyond.
Cup letters increase as cup volume increases.
However, not every Australian brand uses exactly the same patterns or cup construction.
This means a 14E in one brand will not necessarily feel identical to a 14E Berlei.
Use the size as your starting point.
Then confirm the fit on your body.
Berlei Sister Sizing
Sister sizing can help when the cup volume feels correct but the band does not.
If you increase the band size, you generally decrease the cup.
If you decrease the band size, you generally increase the cup.
This helps maintain approximately similar cup volume.
When Can Sister Sizing Help?
Imagine your Berlei cups fit well, but the band feels too loose.
Simply reducing the band while keeping the same cup letter also reduces the cup volume.
Instead, move to the appropriate sister size.
The reverse applies if you need a larger band.
Our Bra Sister Size Chart explains the process in more detail.
Moving From UK Brands to Berlei
Extra care is needed if you normally wear a UK-sized brand.
Brands such as Panache, Elomi, Fantasie, Freya and Sculptresse use UK sizing.
Berlei uses Australian sizing.
Band conversion is relatively straightforward.
For example:
| UK Band | Australian Band |
|---|
| 28 | 6 |
| 30 | 8 |
| 32 | 10 |
| 34 | 12 |
| 36 | 14 |
| 38 | 16 |
| 40 | 18 |
| 42 | 20 |
Cup conversion requires more care.
UK sizing includes cup sizes such as FF, GG and HH.
Australian brands do not always use the same progression.
Do not simply match cup letters when changing sizing systems.
Our Bra Size Conversion guide can help you find the correct starting size.
Berlei vs Triumph Sizing
Berlei and Triumph are both familiar choices for Australian women.
Both use Australian sizing, making the comparison simpler than moving between Australian and UK brands.
However, the same labelled size can still feel different.
Band stretch, cup depth, moulding and bra construction all influence fit.
A Triumph minimiser, for example, should not be expected to fit exactly like a Berlei contour bra.
Likewise, a Berlei sports bra may feel considerably firmer than an everyday Triumph bra.
If your current Triumph bra fits correctly, use that Australian size as your starting point in Berlei.
Then assess the individual bra.
Berlei vs Panache Sizing
Panache uses UK sizing, while Berlei uses Australian sizing.
Do not simply transfer the size label between them.
Panache bands can also feel relatively firm compared with many Australian bras.
If moving from Panache to Berlei, first convert your size correctly.
Then assess band firmness and cup capacity independently.
Visit our Panache Fit Guide for more information about Panache sizing.
Berlei vs Elomi Sizing
Elomi also uses UK sizing.
Some Elomi styles can feel generous through the band or cup.
Do not automatically carry an Elomi-specific size adjustment into Berlei.
Convert your size first and then assess the Berlei bra.
Our Elomi Fit Guide can help if you regularly move between these brands.
Berlei Sports Bra Sizing
Sports bras deserve particular attention within the Berlei range.
A sports bra is designed to control breast movement.
It should therefore feel secure.
This does not automatically mean it is too small.
Check the Sports Bra Band
The underband should remain level around your body during exercise.
It should feel secure without preventing comfortable breathing.
If the band moves significantly during activity, it may be too loose.
Check Breast Containment
Your breasts should remain completely inside the cups.
Check the neckline, sides and underneath.
There should be no significant spilling during movement.
Check the Straps
The straps should stabilise the bra without painfully digging into your shoulders.
Do not overtighten them to compensate for a loose band.
Check the Underwires
If your Berlei sports bra is underwired, make sure the wires surround your breast tissue.
They should never sit directly on it.
Perform a Movement Test
A sports bra cannot be properly assessed while standing still.
Jog on the spot.
Try some star jumps.
Twist from side to side.
Reach overhead.
Bend forward.
Take several deep breaths.
Check breast movement, band stability and overall comfort.
Visit How Should a Sports Bra Fit? and our Sports Bra Movement Test for complete guidance.
Our Sports Bra Support Guide can also help you decide how much support you need for different activities.
How Popular Berlei Sports Bras Fit
Different Berlei sports bras use different support systems.
Berlei Electrify Contour Sports Bra
Electrify uses contour cups to provide shaping and sports support.
Because the cups are pre-shaped, check carefully for spilling or significant empty space.
Your breast shape needs to work with the contour cup.
The band should remain secure during movement.
Berlei Shift Non-Padded Sports Bra
Shift uses a non-padded construction.
This creates a different fitting experience from a contour sports bra.
The cups can conform differently to your breasts without the structure of moulded padding.
Check breast containment and band stability during movement.
Berlei Move Contour Sports Bra
Move also uses contour construction.
Pay particular attention to how your breasts fill the cups.
There should be secure containment without excessive compression or unwanted space.
Do not assume your size in a non-padded sports bra will feel exactly the same in a contour style.
Padded vs Non-Padded Berlei Sports Bras
Padding can change how a sports bra feels.
A padded or contour cup has more structure and maintains its own shape.
A non-padded cup can usually adapt more easily to your natural breast shape.
Neither option is automatically more supportive.
The quality of the complete bra construction matters more.
Visit our Padded Sports Bras and Non-Padded Sports Bras guides to compare the two styles.
How Popular Berlei Everyday Bras Fit
Berlei also offers a broad range of everyday bra constructions.
Berlei Barely There
Barely There is designed around everyday comfort and a smooth appearance.
Its fitting experience should not be compared directly with a high-support sports bra.
Check that the band feels secure without excessive pressure.
Berlei Barely There Lace
Barely There Lace combines familiar everyday support with lace detailing.
As always, use your normal Berlei size as a starting point and check the individual fit.
Berlei Barely There Breathe
Breathe uses its own fabric and construction.
Differences in stretch can affect how the band and cups feel compared with other Barely There styles.
Berlei Lift & Shape
Lift & Shape styles focus on supportive shaping.
Check that your breast tissue is completely contained and that the underband remains level.
Berlei Lift & Shape Spacer
Spacer fabric is lightweight and breathable while creating a smooth cup shape.
It can feel more flexible than some traditional moulded cups.
However, breast shape still matters.
Berlei UnderState
UnderState styles are designed with their own comfort and support characteristics.
Do not assume your size in another Berlei collection will create an identical feel.
Berlei UnderState Full Coverage
A full-coverage bra contains more breast tissue than lower-cut styles.
This can create a different sensation around the neckline and upper cup.
Women moving from lower-coverage bras should check the complete cup fit rather than judging by appearance alone.
Contour and Spacer Bras Need the Right Shape
Berlei has several smooth-cup styles.
This makes understanding moulded and spacer cups particularly useful.
Contour Cups
Contour cups are pre-shaped.
They create a smooth, rounded appearance beneath clothing.
However, the fixed cup shape must suit your breasts.
If it does not, you may see empty space even in the correct size.
Spacer Cups
Spacer fabric also creates a smooth appearance but is generally lighter and more breathable.
It can provide additional flexibility compared with some traditional foam cups.
Visit our T-Shirt Bra guide for more information about choosing smooth bras for everyday clothing.
Common Berlei Fit Problems
Most fitting problems involve size, breast shape or bra construction.
The Band Rides Up
Your band may be too loose.
Try a smaller band and adjust the cup using sister sizing if necessary.
The Band Feels Too Tight
Check the cups before increasing your band size.
Small cups can make the entire bra feel tighter.
My Breasts Spill Over the Cups
You may need a larger cup.
Make sure all your breast tissue is positioned inside the cups first.
My Cups Have Empty Space
You may need a smaller cup.
However, moulded and contour bras can also create space when the cup shape does not suit your breasts.
My Underwires Dig In
Check whether the wires are sitting on breast tissue.
Wire width and shape can also affect comfort.
Visit our Bra Underwire Problems guide for more help.
My Straps Dig Into My Shoulders
Your straps should not provide all your support.
Check the underband before tightening them further.
Our Bra Strap Problems guide explains common strap issues.

How to Check Your New Berlei Bra
Start by putting your bra on correctly.
Make sure all breast tissue is positioned completely inside the cups.
Our How to Put On a Bra Correctly guide explains how.
Then use the Six-Point Bra Fit Check.
1. Band
Is it firm, level and secure?
2. Cups
Are your breasts fully contained?
3. Centre Front
Does it sit correctly for the bra’s design?
4. Underwires
If present, do they surround your breast tissue?
5. Straps
Are they secure without painful pressure?
6. Movement and Comfort
Does your bra remain correctly positioned as you move?
A new bra may also feel firmer than an older, stretched bra.
Our What a New Bra Should Feel Like guide can help you decide whether that firmness is supportive or uncomfortable.
Choosing Your Berlei Bra Size
Start with your current correctly fitted Australian size.
If you already wear Berlei successfully, your established size provides a sensible starting point for another Berlei style.
Then consider the bra’s construction.
A contour sports bra, non-padded sports bra, spacer bra and everyday comfort bra can all feel different.
Check the band and cups independently.
If only the band needs changing, sister sizing may help.
If you are moving from a UK brand, convert your complete size carefully.
Most importantly, consider breast shape.
Sometimes changing the bra style will solve a fitting problem more effectively than changing the size.
Find Your Best Berlei Fit
Understanding Berlei bra sizing makes it easier to choose between Berlei’s many everyday and sports bra styles.
Your current correctly fitted Australian size provides the best starting point.
From there, assess the individual bra.
Check the band, cups, centre front, underwires and straps.
Consider your breast shape as well as your size.
Remember that individual Berlei styles can fit differently.
Electrify, Shift and Move use different sports bra constructions.
Barely There, Lift & Shape and UnderState also provide different everyday fitting experiences.
If you are unsure of your current size, begin with Determine Your Size.
Then use our Six-Point Bra Fit Check to assess your new Berlei bra.
